Description

The Old House is a house that likely dates from the 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The building features a mix of partly coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, as well as sections of ashlar and timber framing with rendered infill, along with some painted brick replacement walling. It has plain tiled roofs, including a parapet at the west gable end and an ashlar ridge stack with a rebuilt brick shaft at the west end. Additionally, there is a 20th-century yellow and blue brick stack on the north side of the main ridge.

The house is designed in an L-plan, with a main range of three bays aligned east to west and a two-bay wing at the west end of the rear south elevation. This wing features a large external chimney with offsets and a rebuilt brick stack on its east side. The building has two storeys, a cellar, and an attic with dormers. The framing includes two rows of square panels at the first-floor level of the central and west bays of the north elevation and the west elevation of the rear wing.

The north front elevation displays irregular fenestration, with 19th-century casement windows. On the ground floor, there is a 2-light window, a large 3-light window, and a 4-light chamfered mullioned window, all of which have hoodmoulds. The first floor features two 3-light windows with weatherboarded infill beneath them. In the western bay, the ground floor is at a higher level, with a 3-light chamfered mullioned cellar window that has iron bars. An attic light is located in the east gable end. The main entrance is situated in the rear south elevation, and a 19th-century single-storey two-bay wing adjoins the east side of the rear wing, partly enclosing the external chimney.
