Description

Hill Cottage is a house dating back to the 16th century, with alterations and additions from the early 19th century and mid-20th century. Part of the house is timber-framed with rendered infill, while the remainder is built of coursed limestone rubble on a chamfered limestone ashlar base, topped with a machine-tiled roof that is half-hipped at the west end. It has two-and-a-half bays aligned east to west, with external chimneys to the rear of the central and east bays, featuring tall brick stacks. The house is single-storey with an attic and a cellar. A string course runs along the attic level on the west bay. Exposed timber framing is visible at the east end, featuring two rows of close-set studding, long straight braces in the lower corners, and a collar and tie-beam truss with close-set struts. The south front has two 2-light casement windows with plank weatherings on the ground floor, along with a 20th-century stone mullioned window of two lights to the left. A central gabled dormer incorporates a 2-light casement. A 20th-century gabled porch on timber posts shelters the central entrance, which has a glazed 20th-century door. To the left of the entrance is a fire insurance mark. The gable ends have attic lights. A lean-to addition from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a catslide roof, encloses the rear chimneys. Internally, the original roof structure remains. There are two large fireplaces, and in the east bay, a winding staircase that divides into two to provide access to the central bay. The building was formerly used as a butcher's shop.
