Description

Lower Cottages are two cottages, originally three, located in a row in Little Barrington Village. They date from the late 17th century to early 18th century and were built in at least three phases. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof and have both coursed limestone and a single brick stack. The layout is long and rectangular, with later extensions at the rear. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed store at the left gable end, which is not of special interest.

No 1 is one and a half storeys high and features three rendered two-light eaves dormers with 20th-century wooden casements that have glazing bars. The ground floor has a single two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement retaining rectangular leaded panes on the left side, a blocked doorway to the left, and two single-light and one two-light 20th-century wooden casements with glazing bars. There is also a 19th-century plank door with a single four-pane light at the top, located off-centre to the right.

No 2 is two storeys tall and has two two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements on the first floor, with the right-hand one forming a half dormer with a rendered gable. The ground floor features one two-light and one three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement, all with leaded panes, and a 19th-century plank door to the left-hand bay. Additionally, there is a 19th-century plank door set back within a short passage that has a 14th-century flat-chamfered pointed-arched surround, likely reused, with a moulded hood at the entrance. The cottages have gable-end and axial stacks. The interior is not accessible.
