Description

54 and 55 Church Street are a pair of cottages located at the end of a row, dating from the late 17th century. They are constructed from dressed limestone and feature a tiled roof with both stone and brick axial and gable end stacks, along with coped verges. The cottages are single storey with an attic and have three windows.

No 54 has a 20th-century door and a three-light recessed hollow-chamfered mullioned casement, with a square stone bay and hollow-chamfered mullioned casements to the left. No 55 features a four-panelled door set in a chamfered stone case, with a three-light mullioned casement to the right. Both cottages have three full gabled attic dormers, each with three-light recessed hollow-chamfered mullioned casements and coped verges.

On the left return of No 54, there is a two-light mullioned casement on the first floor and a single light in the attic. The rear of the cottages includes two gabled 17th-century wings; No 54 has a three-light and a single chamfered casement, while No 55 has a glazed door along with single, three-light, and four-light mullioned casements.

The interiors feature chamfered beams with stepped stops and open fireplaces. No 54 includes a plank and muntin partition and a cyma-moulded stone fireplace surround on the first floor.
