Description

6 and 7 Monkton Hill are two cottages, originally three, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. They are constructed from limestone rubble with freestone quoins and dressings, topped with a double-Roman tile roof. The right-hand cottage features a stone stack with a brick shaft on the left gable end, while the left-hand cottage has a 20th-century brick stack on the front slope of its gable end. Each cottage has a two-unit plan, with the left cottage, now part of No. 6, positioned at a right angle to the street. There is a 20th-century lower extension to the right.

The exterior is two storeys high, with each cottage having a two-window range. A continuous ground-floor string course rises to form hoodmoulds over the chamfered stone architraves of the doors at the outer ends. The windows are stone-mullioned and cyma-moulded, featuring two lights. No. 6 has a 20th-century door, PVC windows, and a roof that sweeps at the eaves. The forward wing has a 20th-century hipped roof with one 20th-century two-light PVC window on each floor. No. 7 includes 19th-century three-pane casement windows, a 19th-century six-panel door, and a steeply-pitched gambrel roof with 20th-century rooflights. Despite the alterations to the roofs, the facade maintains continuous stonework. The interior has not been inspected but is believed to have been altered.
