Description
1 and 2 New Road are three houses in one block, now used as offices, dating from the mid-19th century. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof and have a double-depth plan. The exterior features three storeys and a five-window range on the front, with a three-window range on the right side facing Monkton Street. The second floor has 3/6-pane sash windows, the first floor has 6/6-pane sashes, and the ground floor mostly has 6/1-pane sashes.
Number 1 used to face south-west towards Monkton Hill and originally had a three-window range. It includes a two-storey projecting entrance bay on the left, which has a similar cornice and parapet, blank windows on the New Road front, tripartite sash windows on the Monkton Hill front, and a doorway on the right side that is now blocked. There are two doorways on the New Road facade, each with moulded archivolts and fanlights above panelled doors. To the far left, there is a mid-19th century shop window with two panes below a fascia and cornice.
These houses are part of a group built on New Road following the arrival of the railway in 1840-41.
