Description

The Constitutional Club, built in 1909, is an L-shaped building located in Chippenham. It is constructed from squared rusticated limestone rubble with freestone dressings and features a hipped slate roof with an ashlar hexagonal moulded stack positioned to the left of the front slope and the rear wing. The building has two storeys and a six-window range, with freestone quoins and a parapet that includes recessed panels over the windows. There are quatrefoils at the outer ends and two lion-head gargoyles above square moulded cast-iron rainwater heads and square downpipes. The windows are adorned with continuous hoodmoulds and moulded architraves, featuring 2-light mullioned and transomed cross windows.

The entrance range is gabled and located to the left of the centre. The projecting entrance bay is topped with a semicircular pediment that displays the Chippenham coat of arms and the date "1909." Below this, a balcony framed by square Tuscan columns and an entablature features door and side lights. The semicircular balcony is fronted by iron railings on Ionic columns, forming a porch that has a semicircular arch leading to double doors with bolection moulding. To the far left of the entrance is an elliptical arch with stepped voussoirs and a radial fanlight, which leads to a set-back brick single-window range. The interior has not been inspected.
