Description
The Conservative Club, built in 1909, is a three-storey building with a basement, constructed from coursed rock-faced millstone grit with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof featuring coped gables and kneelers. The exterior presents an irregular three-window facade on the street front, topped by a large shaped gable adorned with ball finials. A moulded band runs along the first floor, and to the left, there is a round-headed doorway with double panel doors and a boarded fanlight set in a moulded surround with a bracketed keystone. To the right, two slightly canted three-light mullion windows are separated by a blank cartouche.
At the basement level, there are two shallow arched openings, one fitted with an iron grille and the other with double wooden doors. An inset corner balcony with openwork balustrades and a stumpy column with a bold capital features shouldered archways on each face. To the right, two three-light mullion windows have plain sashes. Above, moulded ashlar bands carry a frieze inscribed with 'CONSERVATIVE CLUB', and a large three-light transom and mullion window is flanked by lower single side lights, all with flat hoods. The centre is topped by a shield inscribed with '1909'.
The left return of the building has a very irregular six-window front that is canted to the left, featuring a gable and a tall stair tower with a parapet and pyramidal roof. An off-centre doorway has a chamfered lintel beneath a shaped hood, with two two-light mullion windows and a single small window to the right. To the left, there is a single sash window and a single doorway. Above, there are six windows, including one round-headed and another circular. The upper section features tall stair windows with two sashes to the left and three paired sashes to the right. The rear elevation is blank, with a two-storey outshut. The interior has not been inspected.
