Description
The Pontypridd Register Office is a building dating from the 18th century, constructed of coursed rock-faced stone with freestone dressings. The main wing is two storeys high and comprises nine bays, built in a free Baroque style. It has a slate roof hidden behind a plain parapet, with a hipped roof design at both ends. The central five bays have a raised ridge punctuated by end stacks and a central cupola featuring pilasters and a pyramidal cap. Windows have been replaced within the original openings; the upper storey windows are under lintels, while those in the lower storey are mainly segmental-headed with keystones. The central bay features a segmental-headed doorway with a keyed head, replaced doors, and an overlight. Above the door is a blank tablet, then a window framed by panelled pilasters with foliage drops, and a lintel enriched with a scroll and foliage. An open segmental pediment, rising above the parapet, displays a date inscription surrounded by scrollwork.
The five central bays exhibit symmetry. A narrower bay is located to the left, with lintelled windows on both storeys, and a wider bay sits at the left end with a pair of windows. The two end bays on the right side are similar, each featuring two upper-storey windows; however, the bay set back from the end has a wide segmental window cut down to create a doorway with double doors. A Tuscan pilaster is present on the left end wall of the main range, alongside a boarded door and a lintelled window in the lower storey. To the left of the pilaster, the roof is lower, with a pair of windows on each storey. On the right side, a similar pilaster is positioned to the right of the centre, topped by a stone eaves stack. To the right of the stack is a bullseye window in the upper storey and a lintelled doorway below. Rear wings, three storeys high, extend from the main range, connected by a lower, two-storey link-wing centrally positioned; this link-wing houses the stair and is characterised by rendered walls, freestone and white-brick dressings, replaced windows, and hipped roofs with brick stacks.
Inside, the entrance vestibule features a dado made of glazed green tiles. The main stair, located in the link between the two rear wings, is an imperial stair with cast iron balusters and a moulded wooden handrail. At the foot of the stairs, two square tiled columns span a segmental arch; these columns continue upwards as newels to the landing, incorporating a blind balustrade. At the lower landing level, two cast iron Tuscan columns support a moulded entablature.
