Description
The National Westminster Bank is an inter-war neo-Georgian building that stands three storeys tall and features seven bays. Constructed of brick with reconstituted stone dressings and quoins, it has a steep slate roof behind coped gables and a parapet, with end brick stacks. The front of the building is symmetrical, except for the three bays to the left of the center, which curve around the corner of the street. The angles of the building are rusticated, and the parapet includes a moulded cornice with a billet frieze.
The lower storey has an ashlar plinth and a moulded sill band, with fielded panels in the bays that are set back from the ends. The windows in these bays feature moulded architraves, while the remaining windows have splayed brick heads and all are fitted with 12-pane horned sashes. The central doorway is framed by an architrave with a cornice that projects on consoles, and it features double panelled doors with raised fields and an Adam-style overlight. The left-hand bay, which was originally a doorway, is now blocked but retains a similar overlight to the main entrance. A moulded plat band, concealed behind a modern fascia, separates the lower and middle storeys. The middle storey windows have 12-pane sashes under splayed heads with keystones, while the upper storey windows are shorter, have plain splayed heads, and are fitted with 9-pane sashes.
Inside, the main banking hall on the right side boasts a coffered ceiling that is enhanced with classical friezes.
