Description
10 Church Street is a three-storey building with four bays, where the right-hand bay is narrower, constructed on a steel frame. The middle and upper storeys, numbered 4 to 8, are faced with stone. The roof is hidden behind a parapet featuring a moulded cornice. The upper storeys are divided by giant order pilasters with Greek key capitals, while the middle storey windows are flanked by pilasters with fluted capitals. Between the middle and upper storeys are panelled aprons, each with a prominent roundel in the central panel. Each bay contains three windows with margin-lit metal-frame glazing, although some have had their glazing bars removed. The windows on the middle storey are taller than those above. A deep stone cornice, partly covered by a modern fascia, sits above the lower storey.
The lower storey, encompassing numbers 7, 8, 9, and 10, features polished end pilasters and central square piers that frame a wide passage, which has an added gate leading to a deeply recessed entrance for the offices above. This passage boasts a panelled ceiling and a mosaic floor.
The Hair Center at number 7 has a modern shop front. Davies & Son at number 8 and the two shops on the right, numbers 9 and 10, maintain their original glazing, including cross-pattern clerestorey bands beneath the fascias. The shop at number 10 has double glazed doors with diagonal brass handles and a recessed entrance with a mosaic floor. The shops on either side of the centre, numbers 8 and 9, have splayed corners leading into the passage. Davies & Son at number 8 has its doorway in the splay, featuring a half-glazed door with margin lights and a diagonal brass handle. The shop at number 9 has its own recessed doorway with similar detailing.
Some original windows are still present on the simpler stepped rear of the building.
