Description
9 Church Street is a three-storey building with four bays, the right-hand bay being narrower, and is constructed on a steel frame. The middle and upper storeys, which include Nos 4-8, are faced with stone. The roof is hidden behind a parapet featuring a moulded cornice. The upper storeys are divided by giant order pilasters with Greek key capitals, while the middle storey windows are flanked by pilasters with fluted capitals. Between the middle and upper storeys, there are panelled aprons, with a prominent roundel in the central panel of each bay. Each bay contains three windows with margin-lit metal-frame glazing, although some have had their glazing bars removed. The middle storey windows are taller than those above. A deep stone cornice, partially concealed by modern fascia, sits above the lower storey.
The lower storey, which includes Nos 7, 8, 9, and 10, features polished end pilasters and central square piers that lead to a broad passage (with an added gate) providing access to the deeply recessed entrance for the offices above. This passage has a panelled ceiling and a mosaic floor.
To the left, No 7, known as The Hair Center, has a modern shop front. Nos 8, 9, and 10, which include Davies & Son at No 8, retain their original glazing, including cross-pattern clerestorey bands beneath the fascias. The shop at No 10 has double glazed doors with diagonal brass handles and a recessed mosaic floor. Nos 8 and 9 have splayed corners that lead into the passage; Davies & Son at No 8 has its doorway in the splay, featuring a half-glazed door with margin lights and a diagonal brass handle. The shop at No 9 also has a recessed doorway with similar detailing.
Some original windows remain on the simpler stepped rear of the building.
