Description
8 Church Street is a three-storey building with four bays, where the right-hand bay is narrower, constructed on a steel frame. The middle and upper storeys, numbered 4 to 8, are faced with stone. The roof is hidden behind a parapet featuring a moulded cornice. The upper storeys are divided by giant order pilasters with Greek key capitals, while the middle storey windows are flanked by pilasters with fluted capitals. There are panelled aprons between the middle and upper storeys, with a prominent roundel in the central panel of each bay. Each bay contains three windows with margin-lit metal-frame glazing, although some have had their glazing bars removed. The windows on the middle storey are taller, and above the lower storey, there is a deep stone cornice that is partly obscured by modern fascia.
The lower storey, comprising Nos 7, 8, 9, and 10, features polished end pilasters and central square piers, behind which is a broad passage (with an added gate) leading to the deeply recessed entrance for the offices above. This passage has a panelled ceiling and a mosaic floor.
No 7, known as The Hair Center, has a modern shop front. Nos 8, 9, and 10 retain their original glazing, which includes cross-pattern clerestorey bands below the fascias. The shop at No 10 has double glazed doors with diagonal brass handles and a recessed mosaic floor. Nos 8 and 9, located to the right and left of centre, have splayed corners leading into the passage. No 8 has its doorway in the splay, featuring a half-glazed door with margin lights and a diagonal brass handle, while No 9 has its own recessed doorway with similar detailing.
Some original windows are still present on the simpler stepped rear of the building.
