Description
The Railway Viaduct over the River Rhondda is a 7-bay structure made of coursed rock-faced stone. It features round-headed arches that are skewed in the three southern bays, which cross the river. These southern piers have pointed cutwaters at a low level. The remaining four bays are located on the northern bank of the river. To align the arches, the pier on the northern bank is wider on the western side than on the eastern side. Below the parapet, there is a hammer-dressed stone band, and the parapet itself has tooled copings.
On the southwest side, the railway has been widened, leading to a plate girder projection on the two southern bays, supported by an extension of the original southern pier. The rest of the western side features a stone parapet that ends with shallow piers projecting from the battered abutments, which have higher coping stones. On the northern side, the abutment curves outward and downward on both sides, with plain copings. In contrast, the southern side has a straighter abutment connected to a bridge over Sardis Road, while the southwest side has had the original abutment extended outward in rock-faced stone to accommodate the railway widening.
