Description

Eglwys Gymraeg Sardis, also known as Sardis Chapel, is a simple classical style chapel built from rubble stone with tooled dressings and quoins, indicating that the walls were meant to be rendered. It features a slate roof with a central ridge ventilator. The gable end front has three bays, with a central round-headed doorway that has panelled reveals and double panelled doors topped by a radial-glazed overlight. Above the doorway is a bullseye window, and the outer bays contain tall round-headed windows with Italianate 2-light glazing. A simple cornice band marks the pediment, which includes a straightforward inscription tablet in English.

The side walls have four windows, similar in style to those at the front. On the left side, the sill of the rear window is raised to accommodate a link to an added L-shaped hall constructed from snecked rock-faced stone and topped with a slate roof.

Inside, the decorative-tile vestibule features an etched glass panel with margin lights opposite the main doorway. Half-lit doors with coloured glass lead into the main chapel, while stairs with turned newels and balusters provide access to the gallery through diagonal-boarded doors. The gallery is three-sided and raked, supported by cast iron fluted columns with foliage capitals. The front of the gallery projects on brackets and has open quatrefoil panels above diagonal-boarded panels. The ceiling is adorned with moulded ribs and a panelled cornice featuring a billet frieze.

A round panelled pulpit is located at the front, with flanking steps that have moulded balusters and newels. Behind the pulpit is a large organ made by Norman & Beard. The set fawr includes doors, and the benches have moulded ends, with the rear pews being taller.
