Description
The Railway Bridge over Sardis Road is a single-span structure built in three phases. The earliest phase, designed by Brunel, is located on the eastern side and features coursed rock-faced stone with an elliptical arch and a tooled impost band, characteristic of Brunel's style. A low parapet with railings was added later. The splayed abutments support an embankment and have flat copings. The northern side of the wall has been raised at a later date. The narrower second phase, which is attached at a slight angle to the western side of the bridge, is constructed similarly to the earlier phase using the same materials. This second phase is flanked by high embankment walls, on which a third phase has been added, consisting of a simple late 19th-century plate girder bridge.
