Description
This is a single-span railway bridge built in five phases, located over Graig-yr-Hesg Road. The eastern side features a keyed elliptical arch made of rock-faced stone, complete with an impost band and a band below the parapet, which has plain copings. The splayed abutment walls that retain the embankment have rock-faced copings and end in square piers. On the western side, there is a plate girder span, likely the most recent addition, which includes a projecting concrete footway. The battered abutments have short rectangular piers at the ends of the parapet.
The southern abutment is part of the original phase of the bridge and is constructed from rock-faced stone, although it has been raised with rubble stone. The northern abutment is made of rubble stone and connects to the original phase. The plate girder span is supported by a rough tapering stone pier with V-shaped ends.
The earliest phase of the bridge is located just downhill from this and features rock-faced abutments, impost bands, and a hammer-dressed stone soffit, characteristic of Brunel's style. The second phase, added around 1861, is narrower and has similar detailing, positioned on the downhill side. Next downhill is a narrow plate girder span, followed by the easternmost span, which was constructed to accommodate a double track and has a white-brick soffit.
Additionally, there is an integral stone drainage channel situated close to the southern abutments, featuring a U-shaped watercourse made of coursed hammer-dressed stone, which directs water into a culvert on the eastern side of the bridge.
