Description
Eglwysbach Surgery, formerly known as Capel Goffa, is a former chapel designed in an ambitious classical style. It is constructed of red brick with Bathstone dressings and features mainly sash windows beneath a slate roof. The front facade has three bays, with the central bay highlighted by paired half-round Corinthian pilasters on plinths that support a plain entablature and a pediment, which includes an inscription and a large ball finial at the top. The entrance is set within an architrave with a pediment and features double panel doors, above which is a keyed oculus.
The narrower outer bays are enhanced with rusticated quoin strips. The ground floor windows have pedimented architraves, while the upper windows are framed by keyed round-headed architraves. The outer bays are topped with short parapet balustrades that sit between square piers, each adorned with ball finials. The basement, made of rock-faced sandstone, has a prominent central bay with a doorway flanked by sash windows.
The left side wall has four windows and features pedimented architraves at the lower level and round-headed architraves for the gallery, similar to the front. The right side wall, which faces the river, is more plain, constructed of rubble stone with brick jambs, and includes round-headed upper windows, flat-headed lower windows, and segmental basement windows.
Inside, the building has been thoughtfully converted into a surgery, with consulting rooms added beneath the gallery (the columns have been preserved, although the frontal has been removed) and offices located above. The interior boasts a coffered ceiling with two ornate ceiling roses, and the wall pilasters are topped with Corinthian capitals. Behind the former pulpit, where the reception area is now situated, there is a classical pedimented reredos.
