Description

The Pontypridd Museum, formerly known as Tabernacle Baptist Chapel, is a building designed in a simple classical style, constructed from coursed, rock-faced stone with freestone dressings and quoins, topped with a slate roof featuring ventilators. The symmetrical front has three bays and showcases round-headed windows with bracket sills, featuring 2-light cast iron frames from 1910 that include horizontal glazing bars and diamond-paned heads. The central bay, which is wider, features a gabled porch designed in neo-Baroque style, with a gated entrance beneath a round arch that has a keystone. Rusticated pilasters on either side are inscribed with the names of former ministers and are adorned with entablature swags. Above the porch, the central bay contains a pair of windows, while the outer bays have single windows. A string course runs between the storeys, and a bracket cornice defines a pediment that contains a round-headed recess with a bracket sill, which holds a date stone. The quoins below and the string course between the floors add to the building's architectural detail.

The side walls, which have three windows each, feature windows similar to those on the front. On the right side, there is a round-headed basement doorway with a replaced door, along with three basement windows that are similar to the others, except for one that has been replaced.

Inside, the building has been converted for exhibition use. It retains a three-sided gallery supported by cast iron columns with a boarded panel front. The ceiling features a coved cornice and is divided into four quadrants, decorated with diagonal ribs of painted foliage and boarded bands, culminating in a central octagonal panel. A swept semi-circular arch behind the pulpit frames the organ that was installed in 1910. The pulpit itself has a panelled front with flanking balustrades and steps.
