Description
The Merthyr Road Railway Bridge is a single-arch over-bridge designed with wide elliptical proportions to accommodate Brunel's broad gauge track. It is constructed from coursed hammer-dressed masonry, featuring droved margins on the voussoirs and tall plinth courses. The arch soffit is also made of coursed masonry. At road level, a broad string-course connects to the cappings of the ramped and splayed abutments that flank the track-bed. The bridge has parapets with blocked cappings and twin stone piers that provide a pedestrian entrance and ramp leading down to a former platform on the northwest side of the bridge. Additionally, a modern tubular bridge for pedestrians, created by Saunders Tubecrafts of Liverpool, is attached to the east side of the roadway.
