Description
St James' Church is an early Gothic building with simple Arts and Crafts influences, constructed from red brick and featuring purple tiled roofs. The church has a four-bay nave without aisles, a west bellcote, a south porch, and a lower two-bay chancel with a north vestry. The western end and plinth are rendered, and there are stepped buttresses on the eastern bay of the nave. The windows are lancet-shaped, with voussoirs and labels, and feature diamond leaded glazing. The east window has three lights with a stepped central lancet. The bellcote is stepped and pyramidal, with a timber openwork bell stage, a roof with swept eaves, and a crucifix finial. Each side of the church has four cusped arches. The porch is half-timbered on a brick base, with a pointed arch entrance that has boarded doors and S-shaped braces on the sides, although the pendant and finial are broken.
Inside, the church has a rendered interior with red brick dressings. The roof features arched braced collar trusses that spring from low stone corbels and is boarded. There is a two-order chancel arch, and a low arch to the vestry on the north side of the chancel, which is now infilled. The sanctuary is partially wainscoted with Gothic panelling. Notable interior features include a decorated Gothic pulpit, an octagonal font, and a low iron chancel screen with gates.
