Description

Carmel (Bryn Sion) Chapel is a 19th-century chapel featuring a snecked rubble gable front with quoins, a gallery sill band, and a plinth. The slate roof has boarded eaves and plain bargeboards. A roundel sits above a freestone date plaque. The central window is a small pane bipartite segmental headed design, with surrounding stones raised to form an architrave. This design is repeated on the entrance and other windows, which are small pane sashes with marginal glazing bars; the gallery windows are round arched headed, while the lower ones are square headed. The central entrance has a round arched shape with a fanlight above panelled double doors. The side elevations are rendered in cement and consist of three bays with small pane sash windows, featuring round arched heads over square heads.

The exterior is relatively plain, contrasting with the richly decorated interior, which has an unusually lavish ceiling and reredos for a chapel of its size. The panelled ceiling is coffered at the sides, with a central rose and small rosettes along the ribs, and foliated borders on the rectangular panels down the middle, along with strapwork at the ends. The coved and bracketed cornice features an egg and dart design. The panelled reredos, located behind the set fawr, is framed by twinned Ionic cabled pilasters topped with a deep dentil cornice and includes a Welsh inscription. The 'set fawr' was sourced from a chapel in the Rhondda, and there is a total immersion baptistry to the right. The raked gallery has a wood panelled front and is supported by cast iron columns; an impost band links the gallery windows. Originally, there were two additional flanking reredos before the chapel was enlarged.
