Description

Pontypridd Railway Station Main Platform features a long, distinctly curved platform, most of which is covered by a roof that spans 14 bays, with 8 of those bays having broad projecting canopies. The roof is supported by I-section steel piers from the Lanarkshire Steel Company, which rest on fluted oval cast iron bases. The lightly trussed steel roof has segmental principals and a boarded underside, while the canopies are adorned with deep ogee valencing.

Under the roof, there are 6 buildings that include ticket offices, a station master's office, waiting rooms, and toilets, all designed in a free Egyptian revival style using red brick and terracotta. Each building features parapets, deep bracket cornices, panelled pilasters, and high plinths. The openings are topped with labels over lugged and tapered architraves, and the buildings mainly have fielded panel doors and T-framed windows. At the southern end, there is a 2x2 bay toilet block with long side bays. North of this is the largest building, which houses the ticket office and has a 9-bay platform elevation and 2-bay end elevations, with the northern end displaying a square panel featuring an urn sprouting foliage.

The next building to the north is the station master's office, which has a 6-bay east wall and single-bay end walls, with opposed flights of stairs on the south side of each bay that now lead to closed areas beneath the platform. Both buildings have tall panelled gate piers, with the western side featuring a Baroque style overthrow and sliding lattice gates. Side railings with simple Art Nouveau detail were made by Bayliss Ltd of Wolverhampton. Further north, there is another stair, now the main stair, which has similar piers and an overthrow with additional lettering reading 'Way Out'. The lower level is faced in white-glazed tiles. Beyond this northern stair, there is a lift and 3 more buildings.

Several benches remain, featuring cast iron uprights, including two styles of Great Western Railway benches and others marked with 'BR(W)' for British Rail Western Region. The main waiting room is characterized by pediments at its ends and turned balusters supporting the roof trusses.
