Description

The Carpenters is a detached house located in Little Barrington Village, originally built in the 17th century as two cottages and a carpenter’s shop. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, with a stone slate roof. The house has a long rectangular plan, featuring a small projecting gable in the centre and a lean-to projection to the left. There are 1½ storeys and four 20th-century dormers, each containing two-light metal casements. A two-light, hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casement with a stopped hood is located on the first floor of the projecting gable; the right-hand side of this window has early leaded panes. The ground floor has three large two-light 20th-century metal casements and two smaller, possibly 19th-century casements, all with leaded panes. A 20th-century plank door with fillets is positioned to the right of the projecting gable, sheltered by a 20th-century flat canopy supported on brackets. The house retains an axial and gable-end stack. The gable end stack has a moulded capping and skirting, while the other two stacks have been restored with squared-off cappings and skirtings.
