Description
The Old Forge is a cottage located at the end of a row in Little Barrington Village, dating from the 16th to 17th century. It was likely built around the same time as The Smithy, with which it shares a continuous moulded plinth. The building is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone and features a stone slate roof with an ashlar stack. It has a rectangular plan with a lean-to extension on the right gable end and stands at one and a half storeys.
The exterior includes two large 20th-century rendered dormers that are lit by three-light metal casements with glazing bars. There is a single three-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casement, which has been restored, located on the lower left and features a stopped hood. The central entrance consists of a 20th-century plank door with leaded panes at the top, and it is topped by a 20th-century flat stone canopy with a moulded margin, supported on moulded brackets. To the right, there is a 20th-century double garage door set within a segmental-headed surround, along with a single-storey lean-to. The building also has a single 20th-century axial stack. The interior has not been inspected.
