Description
A pair of houses dating from around 1820, located on Montpellier Terrace in Cheltenham. The houses are constructed of ashlar facing brick, with a stuccoed party wall and have slate roofing, along with iron porches and balconies. The design is three storeys and a basement, with a two-storey entrance bay on the right side. The window arrangement is 3:2+1. The main range features first and second-floor bands, a crowning frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The ground and first floors have 6/6 sash windows, with an 8-pane French window with margin lights on the ground floor. Second-floor windows are 3/3 sashes, and basement windows are 3/6 sashes. The entrances, set two steps above ground level, have roll-edged doors – a four-panel part-glazed door on the left and a six-fielded-panel door on the right – both with lozenge friezes above and fanlights; the fanlight on the right is decorated with batwing and circular glazing bars. The rear of the building retains 6/6 and 3/3 sash windows. The interior is noted to retain original joinery, including panelled shutters, though not fully inspected. The porches have scrolled lozenge and X-motif details on the uprights and openwork friezes, embellished rods at the lower part; five first-floor balconies exist – four with central embellished oval panels, and one central circular panel with scrollwork.
