Description
Numbers 4 and 5 are a pair of semi-detached houses with attached walls, designed in 1824 by architect John Forbes. They are shown as built on Merrett's Map of 1834. The exterior features stucco, likely originally ashlar, over brick, with a concealed roof and a stucco party-wall stack. The right side has an ashlar wall, while the left includes an iron porch and a window box.
The houses are two storeys high with a basement and feature four first-floor windows. Architectural details include a plinth, a first-floor band, a crowning frieze, and a cornice with a central raised panel and copings. The windows are 6/6 sashes where original, set in plain reveals with sills. Each house has end entrances with 4-panel doors; the left door is part-glazed and has overlights. The walls on the sides have a shaped cornice and doors leading to the rear garden.
Inside, the houses retain original joinery, including shutters visible to the right. Notably, the house on the right (No.5) has a tent porch adorned with double scrolls, and the ground floor window box on the right features an X-motif. The wall to the right abuts No.6. Historically, Montpellier Villas was originally known as Montpellier Retreat, and Forbes served as the architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate from 1835 to 1836. These houses form a group with Nos. 1, 2, and 3 (The Beehive Hotel) and Nos. 6, 7, 8, and 9.
