Description

This villa, now divided into two dwellings (Numbers 11 and 11A), was built around 1840 to 1850, with later additions and alterations including a late 19th-century service range on the right-hand side. The main structure is stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and a stuccoed stack on the left end featuring an oversailing course. The building has two main floors built upon a basement, with an attic above, presenting a three-window facade on the first floor and a two-window facade on the lower floor to the right. The design follows a double-depth, central hallway plan. Architectural details include quoins to the corners, windows with tooled architraves, sills on feet, and cornices on console brackets. A moulded cornice and wide eaves are supported by brackets. The windows are predominantly 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes with horns, with tripartite windows on the ground floor; the basement windows are 4/8 sashes; and the attic dormers have 3/3 sashes. A flight of roll-edged steps leads to the central entrance, which has a round-arched opening with a tooled head on corbel brackets. This frames a recessed four-panel door with a glazed upper panel and sidelights. The service range has 2/2 and 1/1 horned sashes, and a four-panel part-glazed entrance door with a fanlight. The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters. The attached railings to the sides of the main entrance steps consist of stick balusters, followed by panels of a scrolled lozenge motif. The villa forms part of a distinguished group of villas in the area.
