Description

A pair of houses, originally known as Montpellier Retreat, dating from approximately 1824 to 1828, with later additions and alterations. The architect was likely John Forbes, who served as architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate from around 1835 to 1836. The houses are built of stucco over brick, with a concealed roof and stucco party-wall stacks. They have a double-depth plan, incorporating outer stairwells and full-height service ranges to the rear.

The exterior has 3 storeys over a basement, with 5 first-floor windows arranged 3:2, and a blind entrance bay set back slightly to the right. Stucco detailing includes rustication on the ground floor and tooled architraves to the ground and first-floor windows. The windows are mostly 6/6 sash windows, taller on the first floor, all set within tooled architraves and with sills. The basement windows are 3/6 and 4/8 sashes with 20th-century doors. The entrances have 5-panel doors with overlights featuring margin lights.

The interior is noted for retaining original features, including joinery such as panelled shutters and a marble fireplace on the right side. The first-floor balconies have embellished rods with X-motif friezes and central scroll panels. Lancet forecourt railings are located to the right.

The railings are characteristic of those common in Cheltenham between 1800 and 1820. The houses are part of a terrace that was likely designed by Forbes.
