Description
A pair of terraced houses, numbers 10 and 11, and attached area railings to number 11, were built around 1824 to 1828. The houses were likely designed by John Forbes, who was the architect and surveyor for the Pittville Estate during that period. They are constructed with stucco over brickwork, and have concealed roof and stucco party-wall stacks. The houses have a double-depth plan with a central hallway.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a basement in the centre, and six windows on the first floor. A first-floor band, a crowning cornice, and a blocking course are present. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sashes within plain reveals and sills. The central entrances have four-panel doors; the door to the right features a fanlight with a batwing and circle design (now blocked on the left side), and the entrance on the left has a lower four-panel door. The basement windows are 4/4 and 3/6 sashes.
Inside, the houses retain original joinery. The house on the right has a central hall with a dogleg staircase featuring stick balusters and a newel post topped with an acorn finial.
The area railings attached to the right-hand house have spearhead and dog-bars. The street was originally known as Montpellier Retreat.
