Description
37 Montpellier Villas is a house built around 1824-1828, likely designed by John Forbes. It features stucco over brick with a slate roof, an iron porch, and a window box. The house has a double-depth plan with the entrance and stairwell located to the right.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a basement, with two windows on the first floor. Notable stucco detailing includes a band on the second floor, a crowning moulded string, frieze, and cornice. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows, the second floor has 3/3 sash windows, the ground floor has an 8/8 sash window, and the basement has a 6/6 sash window, all set in plain reveals with sills. The entrance features a 6-fielded-panel door framed by fluted jambs. At the rear, there is a 9/6 staircase sash window.
Inside, the house retains many original features, including two marble fireplaces on the ground and first floors, each with roundels at the corners. The original joinery includes panelled shutters and 6-panel doors, and there is a dogleg staircase with stick balusters.
The porch displays a heart-and-scroll motif on the left side and a round arch with a scroll frieze. The ground-floor window box is adorned with a flower and scroll motif. Historically, the house was originally known as Montpellier Retreat, and most of the houses in the area were likely designed by Forbes, who became the architect and surveyor for the Pittville Estate around 1835-1836.
