Description

Numbers 73 and 75 are a pair of terraced houses with attached area railings located on Montpellier Terrace in Cheltenham, built around 1800 to 1820. The houses are constructed of ashlar over brick and feature a hipped slate roof, with two tall stucco party-wall stacks. The exterior comprises two storeys with a basement and six first-floor windows arranged in a 3:3 pattern. The end window bays project slightly forward. The ground floor has casement windows, while the left side of the first floor features tall six-pane casements, and the right side has 20th-century replacements. All windows are set in plain reveals, with the left side having blind boxes. The basements contain 8/8 sash windows. The entrances at either end have elliptically-arched openings with recessed six-fielded-panel doors, side-lights, and overlights. A frieze and cornice with a blocking course crowns the structure.

Inside, the houses retain original joinery, including panelled shutters on some windows, although the interior was not fully inspected. The first-floor window guards feature an arcade design on the left and a rod and lozenge motif on the right. The area railings of No. 73 display a Cottingham-type scroll motif. Historically, these houses are believed to have been built as two gardener's cottages for Lord Suffolk's house, suggesting they may have been constructed before his death in 1812.
