Description
Claremont House is a detached house, dating to circa 1820-1834. It is situated on an important corner site and is now used as offices and flats. The house was depicted on Merrett’s 1834 map of Cheltenham, but not on the Post Office Map of 1820. It is constructed of ashlar over brick, with a hipped slate roof and two brick stacks on the left side. The exterior features a wrought-iron balcony and railings.
The three-storey house with basement has four windows on the first floor. Architectural details include first- and second-floor bands, a crowning frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are 6/6 sashes, with taller windows on the first floor; sills are present on the ground and second floors. A flight of roll-edged steps leads to a six-fielded-panel door with a fanlight incorporating batwing and circular glazing bars. All openings have plain reveals and sills. The basement has 6/6 sashes. The right return has a three-window range, alongside an outshut; the main range features blind openings, and the outshut has a 6/6 sash.
The interior is noted to retain original joinery, including panelled shutters and six-panel doors, although a full inspection has not been carried out. The continuous first-floor balcony has embellished rods with a scroll frieze. The railings to the sides of the steps feature lancet or stick balusters.
