Description

A pair of houses, numbers 51 and 53, with attached area railings to number 53, dating to approximately 1820-34. They were shown on a map of 1834 but not on one from 1820, and a third floor was added around 1830-50. The construction is stucco over brick, with a concealed roof, a brick stack at the left end, and wrought-iron balconies and railings. The houses are three storeys and have a basement, with five windows on the first floor (arranged 3:2) and four on the second floor (arranged 2:2). Stucco detailing includes a frieze and cornice over the first floor, topped by pilasters with recessed panels at the ends and between the outer windows, and a crowning frieze and cornice with a blocking course. The original windows are 6/6 sashes in plain reveals, with sills; those at number 51 have sills with feet to the first and second floors. The central entrances have 4- and 6-panel doors with a lattice frieze and fanlights, the door to the left (number 53) featuring radial glazing bars. The rear of the building retains several original 6/6 sashes. The interior was not inspected. Attached area spearhead railings are located on the left side.
