Description

Beaufort House, built in 1826 with later alterations, is a villa located on Montpellier Terrace in Cheltenham. The building features stucco over brick, a concealed roof, and a wrought-iron balcony, window guards, and railings. It has two storeys above a basement and three first-floor windows, with a central breakforward. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows, while the ground floor includes a tripartite 1/1 sash window with a fanlight and radial glazing bars in double-chamfered reveals to the left, and a rectangular bay to the right that covers a similar round-arched opening. A flight of roll-edged steps leads to a four-column Ionic porch, which has an architrave, frieze, and cornice with a blocking course, along with a four-panel, part-glazed door featuring a fanlight with radial glazing bars and margin lights. The building is topped with a crowning frieze and cornice with a blocking course, and raised upshots over the breakforward. The basement on the left is now a garage. The rear of the house includes a round-arched staircase window and additional 6/6 sash windows. Inside, it is reputed to retain original features, including fireplaces. Notable subsidiary features include a web motif and oval panels on the first-floor window guards and the balcony over the porch, with railings on the sides of the porch featuring a similar balustrade.
