Description
Numbers 11 and 15 to 41 Montpellier Terrace is a terrace of fourteen houses, now used as houses, flats, a hotel, and offices, built between 1820 and 1834. The terrace appeared on Merrett’s 1834 Map but not the 1820 Post Office Map. Attached area railings are present to numbers 11, 15, 17, 25 to 29, 37, 39, and 41; number 13 is absent. The construction is primarily ashlar facing brick (with some sections stuccoed and painted), with a slate roof and brick and stucco party-wall stacks. The design follows a double-depth plan.
The exterior features three storeys over a basement, with a four-storey elevation to the left (number 11), and a pedimented attic storey to number 39, which also includes an attic dormer window to number 41. The overall arrangement is 38 first-floor windows across the terrace, arranged 2:2:2:3:3:3:3:3:3:3:2:2:3:2:2. Number 39 and the adjacent house (number 41) project forward. Detailing includes horizontal rustication on the right-hand side (number 11), full-height pilasters with panelled recesses on the projecting portion (number 39), first- and second-floor bands, a crowning frieze, cornice and blocking course. Most windows are 6/6 sashes, with margin-lights on those at number 39. Attic windows are 3/3 sashes with margin-lights; number 11’s attic has 3/3 sashes. Entrances are positioned alternately to the left and right, with roll-edged steps leading to 6-panel doors, some with glazing, friezes either reeded or latticed. Fanlights incorporate batwing and circle glazing bars; number 39’s overlight has margin-lights. Basement windows are primarily 8/8 and 6/6 sashes. The return elevation exhibits horizontal rustication to the ground floor, 6/6 sashes, with taller windows to the first floor, and 3/3 sashes in the attic. Tooled architraves are present on the first and second floors, and a frieze and cornice are on the return elevation.
The interior is reported to retain original woodwork and panelled shutters, though further inspection was not carried out.
Subsidiary features include continuous first-floor balconies with a lozenge motif, central panel with circle motif to numbers 37 to 41, and arcaded rod and lattice balustrades to numbers 23, 25, 27, 33, and 35. Number 31 has concentric circles; numbers 15 to 21 exhibit scrollwork. Number 11 has a Carron Company heart-and-anthemion motif; the left return displays individual window guards with a Carron Company heart-and-anthemion motif. The area railings feature lancet, X-motif, and stick with bobbin details, with urn finials on the stanchions. Number 35 has ground-floor window boxes, and some scrolled bootscrapers are present.
