Description

Montpellier Exchange is a building located in Cheltenham, originally constructed in 1843 as a block of three shops, which included a bank at the time of listing. It features a slate mansard roof and is designed with ashlar stone over brick. The architects are possibly Samuel W. Daukes and J. Hamilton.

The exterior of the building consists of two storeys with an attic and six windows on the first floor. The ground floor has a plinth and banded rustication topped with a cornice. The first-floor windows are framed with tooled architraves, and there is a frieze and cornice above them. The corners of the building are chamfered. There are entrances on the left and off-centre right, featuring double doors with two fielded panels and overlights in tooled architraves, with the left entrance set in a recess. The ground floor has two 6/6 sashes and two 2/2 sashes, while the first floor has 6/9 sashes, and the attic contains 3/6 sashes. The returns of the building have two windows deep, with ground floor windows being 6/6 sashes in a shared architrave. The first floor has two 6/9 sashes on the left, a blind opening, and a 2/2 sash to the left. The right return features the carved name 'MONTPELLIER EXCHANGE'. The rear of the building has rounded angles and retains 6/6 sashes.

The interior is reputed to have a narrow open-well staircase with stick balusters. Historically, this site is significant as it occupies an important junction at Montpellier Walk, Montpellier Terrace, and Lansdown Road.
