Description

The shops at 24 and 25 Montpellier Walk date from around 1836 to 1840, with later alterations. The building is constructed of ashlar over a brick base, with a slate roof. A gault brick stack with a cornice is located at the left end.

The building is divided into two separate shops. The shop at number 24 is single-storied and single-bayed. To its right is a three-storey, four-window wide range. The left shop has a plate-glass window and a partially glazed 20th-century door with a matching overlight. A frieze and cornice are topped with a balustrade featuring short, square balusters and a central raised carved panel with a surmounting pediment and ball finials. The shop to the right has a tripartite window and a 20th-century glazed door; a caryatid supports a pulvinated oak-leaf frieze, as is characteristic of Montpellier Walk. The first floor has panelled pilasters surmounted by a moulded cornice with a central pediment on corbels, above a pair of mullion and transom windows, these being flanked by outer lights with transoms. The second floor mirrors this fenestration, with a continuous moulded sill band featuring feet, slender pilasters, and a continuous crowning cornice. The crowning cornice is topped by a balustrade with outer urns on plinths, a central raised date panel with a pediment, and a crowning finial.

The interior was not inspected. The building's construction is described in "The Building of the Montpellier Shops" by Blake, published in the Cheltenham Local History Society Journal in 1984.
