Description

Barrowby House (Number 3) and Suffolk Court (Number 4) are a terrace of houses, now flats, dating back to approximately 1832. The houses are constructed of ashlar facing brick, with brick party-wall stacks, and they feature wrought-iron railings and balconies. They have a double-depth plan, incorporating service ranges to the rear. Barrowby House (Number 3) has a 3-storey service range, while the others are 1 and 2 storeys in height.

The exterior is three storeys high, with basements and attics, and originally had six first-floor windows. Decorative bands with an incised Greek key motif run between the first and second floors. A continuous sill band is present on the first floor. The windows are predominantly 6/6 sashes, with 3/3 sashes to the third floor, and are set in plain reveals. Flights of steps lead to six-fielded-panel doors with fanlights. Gabled roof dormers are fitted with 3/3 sashes. The rear elevation retains 6/6 and 3/6 sashes. A left return side features three blind windows and a 6/6 sash.

The interior of Number 3 retains original plasterwork, including bead and reel moulding, some fireplaces, and a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a newel post. An arched hall is supported by corbels, and the joinery includes 4-panel doors. Suffolk Court also has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail, though it was not fully inspected.

The first-floor balconies have metal railings and ornate central panels. The area railings and those to the sides of the steps are adorned with spearheads and anthemion finials. The property was shown on Merrett’s 1834 map and forms a group with Montpellier House.
