Description
St James's Terrace is a terrace of six houses built around 1840 to 1850, located on the west side of Suffolk Parade in Cheltenham. The houses are constructed with stucco over brickwork, featuring concealed roofs and brick and stucco stacks. They follow a double-depth plan, with right-side staircases and service ranges to the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high, with twelve first-floor windows (two per house). Stucco detailing includes a plinth, horizontal rustication to the ground floor, voussoirs over the cambered entrances, and a first-floor band. Three of the houses at the right have a moulded string, frieze, and moulded cornice, although the cornice is missing from the left. There’s also a continuous blocking course and copings. The first floor has six-over-six sash windows in plain reveals and with sills. The ground floor features tripartite sashes with two-over-two horizontal panes, and six-over-six windows between two-over-two panes on the end and off-centre right houses; most of the other ground floor windows are now late 20th-century shop fronts. The entrances at the right have steps leading to four-panel part-glazed and six-flush-and-fielded-panel doors within moulded surrounds, where original, and overlights with glazing bars.
The interiors retain original joinery and plasterwork, including dogleg staircases with stick balusters and wreathed handrails, and some mahogany newels. The terrace forms a group with the Parish Centre for St Philip and St James on Suffolk Square, and is situated close to other 19th-century properties in Suffolk Parade.
