Description
Number 77 and 79 are a pair of houses, built in Cheltenham in 1808 and 1815, with attached area railings to number 77. Number 79 is ashlar faced over brick with a concealed roof and central brick stacks; number 77 is similarly constructed. Both have iron window boxes and a porch. Externally, the houses are three stories and basement, with four windows to the first floor (arranged as 2:2 sashes). Ashlar details include bands across the first and second floors, tooled architraves to the ground and first floors on the left side, and a remaining frieze and cornice to the right (missing to the left). The basement has replacement 3/3 sashes. The ground and first floors have tall 6/6 sashes, while the second floor has 3/3 sashes; all are within plain reveals with sills (the ground and first floor sills have decorative “feet”). Roll-edged steps lead to part-glazed 4-panel doors with fanlights; the fanlight to the right has batwing and circle glazing bars. A tooled round-arch is above the left-hand entrance, and an archway abuts number 81. Inside number 77, there are embellished friezes and a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The interior of number 79 was not inspected. The first floor of number 77 has window guards with rails to the right and a circular motif to the left. The porch is to the right and has a tent roof and openwork frieze. The area railings to number 77 have bars and dogbars with spear heads.
