Description
The gate piers and gates to Berkhampstead School, dating from around 1840 to 1860, are a notable architectural feature located on the south side of Pittville Circus Road in Cheltenham. The gate piers are constructed of ashlar stone over a brick base. They have chamfered plinths and feature vermiculated and channelled shafts with chamfered angles. The piers are topped with a crowning band, frieze, and a moulded cornice that includes cross-gabled caps. These elements contribute to a pleasing streetscape and are an important part of the setting for Berkhampstead School. The 20th-century gates that connect the piers are not included in the listing.
