Description

Berkhampstead School is a pair of semi-detached villas that date from around 1840 to 1860 and have been converted into a school. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick and feature a hipped slate roof with tall end stucco stacks.

The exterior consists of two storeys above a basement, with a symmetrical arrangement of windows: one window, six windows, and one window on the first floor, where the central section projects slightly forward. There is an extension to the right. Notable stucco detailing includes quoins at the ground floor of the projecting section, sills on feet, and cornices on embellished console brackets for the ground floor windows. A continuous tooled sill band runs along the first floor, with feet beneath the first-floor windows. The eaves band is interrupted by architraves, and there are brackets supporting the wide eaves.

The entrances are located at the ends, with steps leading to round-arched recesses that feature channelled piers and imposts, along with tooling at the head and keystone. Inside the recesses are a four-panel door on the right and double glazed doors on the left, both with overlights. The windows throughout are 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes, with the outer ground-floor windows being tripartite. All windows have plain reveals and tooled architraves, and the ground-floor windows are embellished with acanthus designs on their sills.

The interior retains original features such as joinery with panelled shutters, two dogleg staircases with lion's paw feet and run-out balustrades, turned balusters, and some marble fireplaces. Moulded cornices and ceiling roses are present, along with four-panel doors. The school occupies a prominent corner site.
