Description
The main and side gates, along with four gate piers, are located to the southeast of Kimbolton School and date from the early 18th century. The four square section piers are made of rusticated stone ashlar, standing on a plinth and topped with an entablature. On the south side, there is a mid-18th century frieze decorated with festoons, drops, and paterae. Each pier features a moulded cornice and shallow pyramidal finials. The early 18th century gates are crafted from wrought iron and are adorned with scrolls, arabesques, and the full achievements of the Montagu coat of arms. The two inner piers are connected to the outer piers by a wall of coursed and dressed stone, which has a moulded cornice and parapet. The openings for the side gates have moulded architraves. It is believed that these gates and piers were originally located at the east entrance to the Park in Park Lane and were moved to their current position around 1763 to 1766.
