Description
49 Market Street is a house located in Hatherleigh, dating from the early 19th century, though it may have earlier origins. The building features plastered walls and a gable-ended roof covered with asbestos slate. It has an axial rendered brick stack and an additional brick stack at the left gable end. The house has a two-room plan with a central entrance and stands two storeys high.
The front of the house is asymmetrical with four windows. To the left, there is a two-storey canted bay that includes a mid-19th century sash window on the first floor with a configuration of 2:6:2 panes, and a similar 20th-century window below. The other first-floor windows are late 19th-century sashes with four panes. On the ground floor to the right, there is an early 19th-century shop front that is pilastered and features a moulded cornice. The entrance has a contemporary pilastered doorcase with Ionic capitals, a decorative frieze, and a dentilled cornice. The reveals are panelled, and the door is both panelled and glazed. The interior has not been inspected.
