Description
The Old Court Room is a house located on Market Street in Hatherleigh, with origins likely dating back to the 17th century, although it was significantly remodeled in the early 19th century. The building features plastered walls and a gable-ended slate roof. The current layout likely represents only part of the original structure, which may have extended further at either end. It now consists of a large room with a passage to the right, along with 19th or 20th-century additions at the rear.
The exterior is two stories high and has an asymmetrical front with three windows, featuring early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows. At the right-hand end, there is a contemporary reeded doorcase with a dentilled cornice and panelled reveals, leading to a fielded six-panel door.
Inside, both the ground and first floors appear to lack distinctive features, although some may be hidden. However, in the loft, there is an early 19th-century segmental plaster ceiling with simple cornice moulding. Historically, the building was used as a meeting hall, established in 1821 as "the Public Subscription Rooms," and in 1853, it became the court of Petty Sessions, with some cells added at the rear.
