Description

No. 35 is a house and shop located on Hatherleigh Market Street, dating from around the mid to late 19th century, possibly as a remodelling of an earlier building. The structure features plastered walls and a gable-ended slate roof, with a large plastered brick axial stack. The building has a double depth plan, with a shop at the right-hand end, a two-room wide house at the center, and an outbuilding or carriageway leading to a rear courtyard at the left-hand end.

The exterior consists of three storeys and presents an asymmetrical four-window front with original fenestration. It features three prominent gabled dormer windows on the second floor, which have decorative barge-boards and 2-light small paned casements. The first floor windows are 16-pane horizontal sliding sashes. The shop front at the right-hand end is fairly plain and may not be original. The ground floor has 6-pane sashes on either side of the center, which contains 19th-century panelled double doors beneath a decorative gabled door hood. There is a wide archway with double doors at the left-hand end. The building is topped with a modillion cornice and decorative wall-plates below the eaves. Additionally, it includes contemporary decorative wrought iron railings and a gate with finials immediately in front of the building.
