Description
The small hall located immediately to the north-east of the Churchyard Gate in Hatherleigh is likely to have originally served as a Sunday School or a similar purpose. It features a date stone from 1856, but it may either be a rebuild of one of the medieval collegiate buildings associated with the church or constructed on its site. The building has roughly coursed sandstone rubble walls, which are rendered on two sides, and a gable-ended slate roof.
The hall has a rectangular, single-room layout with an entrance at the gable end. It is a single storey in height. The gable end entry includes a central, two-centred moulded stone doorway with carved initials above and a plank door. Below the gable, there is a quatrefoil opening that contains a stone shield displaying the initials J.S.S. and W.S., along with the date 1866. Each of the long sides has a two-light window featuring two-centred head lights and square hoodmoulds. The interior has not been inspected.
