Description
The National School, located on Market Street in Hatherleigh, is a former educational building dated 1838. It features roughly coursed sandstone rubble walls and a gable-ended concrete tile roof, with a stone stack at the left gable end. The building has a rectangular plan that originally included two schoolrooms, each with separate access. There are stairs located behind the right-hand end in a projection.
The structure is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front, showcasing three-light stone mullions with segmental arched heads. Above the central ground floor window, there is a stone plaque inscribed with "1838 National School." At either end of the building, there are small single-storey battlemented porches, each containing a four-centred moulded stone arched doorway with a plank door. Additionally, a small stone belfry is situated at the apex of the roof on the right-hand gable end, and there is a rectangular stair projection behind the right-hand end.
