Description
Cobbaton Cross Old School Room is a former school building, unoccupied since April 1985, constructed in 1876. It is made of roughly coursed stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with gable ends. The building has a tall lateral stack on the north side, which has gablets at the base and a chequered stone polygonal shaft topped with a crenellated lip and a tapered cap.
The structure is rectangular in plan and consists of a single storey with a gabled porch at the east gable end, which also has a slate roof. The north facade includes straight-headed transomed windows on either side of the stack, while the south side is blind. Each gable end features segmental arched louvred openings above a 2-light transomed window with segmental arches. The east end has a projecting porch made of stone and timber, also with a slate roof.
On the north side, there are windows with 7 lights, and on the south side, there is a 3-light window with a stone surround, while the 4 outer lights have timber surrounds. The gable end has a 6-light window with carved gable braces. The entrance on the south side has a plank door set within a chamfered door surround, accompanied by a short buttress on the left side. Above the porch, there is a bellcote supported by moulded console brackets, featuring a pointed arched bell opening. Inside, the building has dado matchboarding and two plain A-frame roof trusses with raking struts.
